(Offered during Spring, Summer & Fall Trimesters): The focus of this course will be dictation and speed building for passing Literary, Q & A and Jury Charge tests. Students will apply their knowledge of the StenEd theory acquired in Theory I and II to be able to write at 40, 60, and 80 wpm. Students will be required to pass two tests in each of the speeds at 95 percent accuracy. Upon completion of two tests at each speed, students will then immediately move on to higher speed tests. Medical and legal terminology will be introduced as well. Students will also start creating their own personal dictionary.
While students progress to write at 100, 120, and 140 wpm, they will begin to practice with briefs and classroom dictation in an attempt to increase their speeds. Students will be required to pass two tests in each category at 95 percent accuracy. Upon completion of two tests in each category at each speed, students will begin drills to work on correct punctuation of transcripts. Students will continue to build their personal dictionary.
Ultimately, students will receive dictation and practice skills to continue on their way toward passing Literary, Q&A, and Jury Charge at 160, 180, 200, and 225 wpm. You will continue learning briefs and practice dictation in an attempt to increase your speed. Students will be required to pass two tests in each of these three categories at 95 percent accuracy.
In this final segment, everyone should be using a stenotype machine that is computer ready and have student translation software. All students must have a laptop to bring to class to work on dictionary development and realtime translation. After passing the second 180 Q&A test, students can take an internship to prepare for work in the field.
